I grew up in a village in northern Nigeria, and many of my memories from there are of the evenings under the baobab trees.
When the sun went down, people gathered. The mats were rolled out, the kerosene lamps lit, the grown-ups talked, and we children played on until we fell asleep in the middle of it all.
I do not remember what the grown-ups talked about. But I remember exactly how those evenings felt.
In Hausa, the language spoken in the village, there is a word for precisely that.
Hira.
A word for the time that arises when people are together without an agenda.
Many years later we found a piece of land in the heath of North Jutland and decided to build a house here. We knew what it should be called.

THE HOUSE
Architecture
HIRA sits on its own piece of protected nature in the heathland of North Jutland, surrounded by heather, grasses and pines.
The house was designed by architect Rasmus Bak to belong precisely here. Long and simple in form, drawing on Japanese building tradition and Scandinavian design, with a close connection between inside and out.
Large windows open the rooms towards the heath, while terraces on both sides let life follow the sun through the day. Inside there is room for six guests in three bedrooms, and shared spaces that gather around the view.
The materials are natural and chosen to age with the house. Dark, charred timber outside and wood, stone and tile within create a simple, warm frame around life here.
THE LAYOUT
Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open kitchen and dining space made for long, unhurried meals. A living room. A quiet desk. Terraces for following the sun, or settling into the shade.

From morning to evening
Morning
Nearly every day begins around the kitchen and the big round table. Coffee is brewed, breakfast takes shape, and the day is allowed to start at its own pace.
Afternoon
As the sun climbs, life moves outside. With terraces on both sides of the house there is always a place in the sun or the shade for a book, a long lunch, or simply letting time pass.
Evening
A bottle of wine is opened, dinner slowly takes shape, and when the weather allows it, you eat outdoors. Later, you drift back inside and perhaps light the fire. Most evenings, the light over the heath is entertainment enough.

THE SURROUNDINGS
Where the heath meets the North Sea
HIRA sits between the heath of Tranum, the forests and steep slopes of Fosdalen and Lien, and the North Sea beyond. Woodland gives way to open heath, then dunes and wide beaches, with Svinkløv marking one of the most striking stretches of the Danish west coast.

A wonderful retreat in the heart of nature
What a special holiday this was! This architect-designed house is a true gem — thoughtfully and stylishly furnished, with just the right feel for calm and clarity. From the very first moment we were able to slow down and truly arrive, surrounded by pure nature.
One unforgettable highlight was witnessing the solar eclipse right on the beach — a truly magical moment. We also loved the hike along the Svinklovene ridge trail near the bathhouse; the view from up there was simply fantastic. Afterwards we had lunch at Thorupstrand Fiskehus and enjoyed the wonderful selection of fresh fish, overlooking the fishing boats on the beach.
Bente and Anders were wonderful, incredibly welcoming hosts who made us feel truly at home.

Everything you need, and little you don't
HIRA sleeps six across three king bedrooms. When you arrive, the beds are made and the towels are out. Just unpack and settle in.
Children from three years old are very welcome.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the minimum length of stay?
Three nights, outside summer and holiday weeks. Summer, holiday weeks and the Two-Person Retreat are let as full weeks, Saturday to Saturday.
What is included in the price?
Rates include final cleaning, bed linen, towels and utilities. EV charging is billed separately at €0.50 per kWh.
Can we book a longer stay?
Yes. For stays of two weeks or more, please get in touch and we'll be happy to arrange a longer stay.

HIRA is around 35 minutes by car from Aalborg, 1 hour 45 minutes from Aarhus and 4 hours 30 minutes from Copenhagen. Aalborg Airport, with frequent connections to Copenhagen, is 25 minutes away.
Where is HIRA located?
HIRA is in Tranum, on the west coast of Northern Jutland, surrounded by protected heathland and forest, close to the North Sea.
How many guests does HIRA sleep?
HIRA sleeps up to six guests across three bedrooms, each with a king-size bed.
Are children welcome?
Yes, children aged three and above are very welcome.
Is HIRA suitable for parties or events?
No. HIRA is a quiet, smoke-free home made for rest, not parties or larger gatherings.
Are pets allowed at HIRA?
No. As much as we love animals, HIRA is a pet-free home.
What are check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 12:00. Entry is keyless; your personal door code is sent on the day of arrival.
Is there parking and EV charging?
Yes. There is parking for two cars beside the house and an EV charger, billed separately.
Are bikes provided?
Four e-bikes and helmets in a range of sizes are available during your stay.
Is the kitchen fully equipped?
Yes. The kitchen has an induction hob, oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, a pantry of everyday essentials and a gas grill on the terrace.
Can we swim at the beach nearby?
Yes. Tranum Strand is a few kilometres away. The North Sea can change quickly, so check conditions and swim with care.
Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes, high-speed Wi-Fi is included throughout the house.
Can HIRA be used year-round?
The house has underfloor heating in every room, plus a fireplace, so it can be enjoyed all year round.
Is there a washing machine and dryer?
Both are available in the house.
What will we find in the pantry?
The pantry is stocked with the basics for cooking, including coffee, olive oil and spices. For breakfast and other fresh food, you’ll need to do your own shopping.
Is firewood provided?
Yes. Firewood is provided for the fireplace, so you can simply light a fire when the evening calls for it.
Can we cycle to the beach?
Yes. Tranum Strand is an easy ride from HIRA through Tranum Klitplantage. Four e-bikes and helmets are included with your stay.

HIRA is open all year, and the rates follow the seasons.
Summer and holiday weeks are let as full weeks, Saturday to Saturday. Outside summer and holiday weeks the house can be booked from three nights.
Rates always apply to the whole house — with the exception of the Two-Person Retreat, where we prepare only the master bedroom and keep the other two bedrooms closed.
Everything is included
There are no extra fees. When you arrive, HIRA is ready with beds made and fresh towels. Final cleaning, electricity, water, heating and ordinary consumption are included in the price.
